Comprehensive Arts (or "Art Comp" as it is known) is the Integrated Arts course where students get to try their hand at ALL of the arts. So if you are a dancer, you will get to try some visual arts, some drama, some music - if you are an artist, you will get to try performing! We try to expose you to as many different arts experiences as we can and push you outside of your comfort zone. Don't worry though, we do it in an atmosphere of trust and acceptance - no one is going to make you feel bad for trying.
Some of the activities we will be doing in Art Comp are:
*Shona Sculpture trip and Performances*: We visit the Rice Lake Gallery (Semester One) to see the Zimbabwean sculpture, do activities there, then return to PCVS and create integrated arts performance which we perform at the Gallery's Closing party! In public!

*The Four Seasons Ballet and Feldman Art Response*: we will watch a video by the National Ballet and learn about a useful method of responding to the arts. Click here to get a copy of the Note-Taking sheet.
*Community Arts Independent Study*: You will be expected to go to community arts events (two per semester), take notes and write formal responses to them. Click here to get a copy of the Community Arts ISU outline.
Cultural Context Research Activity: Students will be working with a personally-selected arts piece (music, dance, visual art or drama/film) and research the cultural contexts in which the piece was created. Responses will explore how cultural context affects meanings behind art. Click here to get a copy of the Researching Cultural Contexts in Art activity.
Dance and Poetry Workshop: We will be working with a local dance and theatre artist to explore contact-movement and poetry. Click here to get a copy of the Dance and Poetry Workhsop activity outline.
Stomp the School Activity: Students will work to engage with music and movement while exploring elements from our English class reading of Egghead by Caroline Pignat. Click here to get a copy of the Stomp the School activity outline.
*Making Musical Instruments*: We will be studying the basic theories behind how most musical instruments work, constructing our own and then performing in small ensembles using them! Click here to go to a links page for musical instrument making sites
January/June Production: All of the Grade 9 Integrated Arts students will be getting together for a few weeks at the end of each semester to create an Integrated Arts performance for friends, family and our school community. This, along with the reflection is the culminating task for Art Comp.
